My Teaching Philosophy
In the early 2000s, the American government launched a plan for educational reform called "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND". Inspired by these ideals, my teaching philosophy can be distilled into three basic tenets :
#1 No Child Will Be Left Behind
No child will be left behind as I will be accountable for the performance of each child in my class. This means that I will
- Take time to discover each child's abilities / disabilities, areas where he or she excels and areas of weaknesses.
- Recognise that each child is special and responds differently to influences, environment and motivating factors.
- Honour each child's innate desire to excel and to feel a sense of achievement
#2 Focus On What Works
My students teach me new things all the time. I have a 14 years of experience as a child educator; I have been trained in world reknowned methodologies in education; I have created and taught curriculum for childhood learning across Singapore. Yet, my best teachers are the children that I have ever taught. Each child has taught me how to motivate them to achieve greatness. This is what I am continually learning from my kids, and THIS is how I focus on what works.
#3 Communication Is Key
When children under-perform at school, it does not necessarily mean they are afflicted by an innate learning disability arising from a medical precondition. Disappointing results or an attitude of indifference may have roots in deeper psychological causes that may be related to a fear of failure. A child struggling with poor self-image needs to turn self-defeating thoughts around. My challenge is to ensure that each child in my class emerges confident, positive and proud, regardless of their scholastic ability. |
